Soter Mutanbalike - Tanzania - keeps on changing name

We arrange in advance a safari with the company Sunbird managed by Soter Clement Mutambalike, since we trusted your list of reliable tour companies, but actually, according to our experience, this is not at all professional nor reliable.

What we had eventually was a very stressful safari, during which we had to discuss every single day in order to get what we paid for, we even  had to call the Italian and American (other customers were from USA) embassies in order to have what we agreed for.

The embassy was indeed very helpful, but Soter Mutambalike is so an ignoble person that was even able to lie to the officers in a lot of occasions. Indeed, we had to call the embassy, not just once, but more than 6 times. Every step we did we encountered a problem and we had to discuss and ask for some help.

We had also to ask the guardians of the parks to help us and wasted a lot of hours, which we were supposed to spend visiting the beautiful parks of that country.

1. We were supposed and paid for a safari of 6 days in a jeep with 4 people included us. Instead Soter Mutambalike forced us to do the safari in a jeep with other 5 tourists, that means 7 of us in a jeep. Therefore Soter Mutambalike saved a lot of money and we had to be squeezed in the jeep with ALL our luggages on the roof top (preventing the visibility of the animals during the safaris)  and partially inside the jeep. So we had to fight not only among ourselves to find a place but also among cumbersome luggages. Everywhere it is suggested to go for a safari in a jeep with not more than 5 people, so we guess we should not describe why we were disappointed of this first compromise the manager forced us to accept. Moreover we could have paid much less if we wanted to share the jeep with so many people!

2. Three of the people in our jeep had a safari of 3 days. It’s easy to understand that it’s impossible to combine a safari of 6 days with one of 3 days. We all wanted to see the three most beautiful parks Tarangire, Ngorongoro crater and Serengeti, which are not so close by, and since they are quite big the best is to spend a few days in each, but in order to combine the two groups, one of the them should have had to see less than what it payed for.

3. We had to discuss every day of the safari with the guide and Soter Mutambalike (on the phone) in order to have what we payed for. Indeed that manager was trying to save money for any activity we were supposed to do. For instance he wanted us to spend 2 days in Lake Manyara and only one in Serengeti instead of 2 in Serengeti and one in lake Manyara, in order to pay less for the entrance, that were already included in our payment. He even told us that all the animals migrated from Serengeti to lake Manyara! This was considered funny by the guardians we met in Serengeti, and gave an idea on what kind of person Soter Mutambalike  is. His company should have never been included in the list of recommended tour operators of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO http://www.tatotz.org/).

4. He did not give the money for our entrance and camping fees to the guide!!!! He did not top up the credit card of the guide and wanted us to lend him the money for what we had ALREADY paid for. We obviously refused, because we soon understood what kind of person we were dealing with and that we will never seen back that money, but, because of this “inconvenient” we spent a lot of hours at each entrance gate arguing in order to find a solution!
Tanzania is a very contradictory country, so beautiful and so badly managed, with so many amazing places and so dreadful people.

  1. Oh my GOD!!!! This exact same thing happened to us in the summer of 2011. That guy is a horrible business man and should be ashamed and behind bars. I called the U.S. Embassy - WHILE ON SAFARI - and asked them to get involved. They seem to have heard this story before and wanted to know his name so they could call the tourism folks. This man is single-handedly giving the entire country of Tanzania a bad name. (But I feel even worse for the 3 British doctors on our tour who had spent time VOLUNTEERING in Tanzania...they were essentially kicked off the tour with no way back except to beg a ride from another operator, their embassy seemed to not be interested in doing anything...the whole experience was terrible).

  4. The oldman Soter C. Mutambalike is in a new company (companies ?) theese days.
Our tour operator, Africa Smart Safaris Limited of Arusha, and personally its managing director Mr. Soter C. Mutambalike has cheated and stolen our money. And we write to warn possible future tourists to avoid this company.

We (group of 10 tourists) signed a contract with Africa Smart Safaris for climbing to Kilimanjaro and three days safari after that.
The climbing went well and there were no problem with it. The problems started afterwards on January 09. For the first night accommodation Africa Smart Safaris reserved only two rooms instead of five, and for the next two nights reserved nothing at all. We had to pay everything for the second time including the entrance fees to Ngorongoro park, which our driver refused to pay. Mr. Soter did not react to our phone calls and text messages. We informed about the situation officer of TANAPA in Serengeti, but he couldnt do anything.

Finally Mr. Soter sent us a message promising to return our money but it looked like just an attempt to delay. By that time we have already read a post in Tripadvisor by US tourists with similar situation, and understood that this is the way Mr.Soter makes money on tourists.

Finally, Africa Smart Safaris should return us approx. $8000 (!!!), which were paid to them for our safari trip. We made a complaint to Tanzania Tourist Board about the case.

Never, NEVER have deal with this thieves...

  5. Well, ofcourse I am not the first or the last to complain about this thief.
His current company is African Smart Safari registered under Soter C. Mutambalike, but his older companies are: Excellent Safaris - Soter M Clemence, Ngorongoro Direct Safaris Ltd - Clemence Muta, Ngorongoro Direct car hire & Safaris - Soter Mbehata, and others.

We managed to go to the tourist police, have him arrested and receive all our money back. But we are in a minority. Most people do not get their money back and he just stalls untill they have to leave town.
His method is mostly the same, and everybody in town knows him, but he still manages to pull it off more often than not.

    AVOID THIS THIEF

  6. Personally, I would like to see Mutta fed to the hyenas of Serengeti. It still wouldn't be an equal punishment for the biggest Tanzanian thieves his entire family surely are, but I'd be ok with that.

    1. Eh Zozou..what to say...I see that you went in 2014, so that it means that nothing changes there. We were told that nothing could be done and we were told by the IT Embassy not to go to the police, because we could have put us in troubles. I am very sorry to hear that..and I can just say that because of this I do not wanna go back to Africa, for the time being, vale

  7. I first heard of "Mr. Clemence" in 1995. I met a Japanese guy that had been cheated big time and warned me. But... Somehow I ended up in Mutas arms myself the following year. He then called himself "Clemence Muta" and my alert was red... But, he assured me, that Clemence was a very common name in Tanzania... I didn't know better and sadly trusted him. We were a joined group of 4-5 different nationals and had all booked a 5-days trip to Serengeti and Ngorogoro. First of all the driver took us to a small National Park that we were not even ment to go to - but this one didn't require a special permit (which his company didn't have.... maybe why??!!) - and he left us in a nearby lodge and the driver left - telling us he was going (the rather long and quite rough!!!) back to Arusha to pick up the (bigger!!) jeep, we had initially booked. The next morning there was no sign of the driver ...and we were kicked out from the lodge as the rooms were not paid for (and we had to do so). Then we had to catch a local bus to get bach to Arusha. Most tourists have no chance of taking him to court due to restricted time, but in the group was luckily an American woman living in Mwanza - and she promised him to show up in court.... I think this scared him a bit and he agreed to refund us some of the money, when all of us turned up at his office (maybe later he has learned to hide for a few days until people have given up and travelled on???). First he gave us fake dollars...So bad photo copies that it was heard to believe🤣Next he gave us a bank check that the bank refused to exchange, as he had no money on his account. When we turned up at his office for the fifth time or so, he paid us back in Tanzania Schilling - paying the American first, so she was cleared and no longer a threat to court. He tried to escape from paying me by leaving the room. I then grabbed him by his balls (truly spoken🙈)....and he stood instantly still...and I broke my finger, leaving it with a 'bend' and aching ever since. He had an Indian employee of some kind and he became very threatening, so I hurried up, packed my stuff and and left town within an hour. At least I had about half the money back, but I had wasted my time and had to travel on without any safari that year.
So, I'm quite sad to learn that he is still going on with his scam even today... almost 30 years later ☹️☹️☹️🤬🤬🤬
