Looking
for a low cost trip between X-mas and the 06th January, with the
intention to lay in the sun and to scuba dive, we ended up to
Fuerteventura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuerteventura).
The resort we stayed
at wasn’t as good as we imagined it to be, but comparing the other
offer price there was supposed to be a difference…and there were
more than one, for sure!
Anyway, I couldn’t
dive…I got a cold and a flue…so the remaining possibility was
travelling a bit especially due to the lack of sun! Because of my
gipsy mind I couldn’t think of going on an organized tour!
So that I went to look for
a rental car, I found quite a good deal, 30€/day and I rented it
for a couple of days.
The idea was strolling
around Fuerteventura and heading to Lanzarote, too.
This was the first
day plan http://goo.gl/maps/kewoj:
- Starting from Costa Calma ( pay attention at the gas stations shown on the given map before you run out of fuel…they are pretty rare)
- Heading to Pajara
- Heading to Ajuy
- Heading to Bentacuria
- Heading to El Castillo – wonderful beach and for the first day the sun wasn’t cover by any cloud…it seemed to be elsewhere rather than in Fuerteventura, from my point of view (Costa Calma)
- Heading to Puerto del Rosario, to a mall; the person I was with wanted to do some shopping…
- Heading to Morro Jable in order to visit the town and to do some tourist souvenir shopping
Ajuy:
Well not really
recommended…not a beach to stay at…interesting to see the black
“sand” and that’s it.
Sincerely speaking…it
could be skipped.
Betancuria:
One of the best places I
could have visited. Small, white, green and full of flower town.
Relaxing atmosphere and it seems to go back in time. Highly
recommended.
We didn’t have the
chance to visit the Iglesia Catedral de Santa Maria de Betancuria,
but the outside gives you an idea of it!
El Castillo: From
Betancuria to El Castillo we went through a desert landscape. I have
never been to the route 66, but I think it could be compared to it!
Terrific sandy and sunny beach, something different from Costa Calma.
The breeze is very gentle and you just appreciate it! Much more
crowded and full of mainly British tourists.
Morro Jable: The typical
tourist town, full of souvenir shops and jewelries.
The second day itinerary
drives us to Lanzarote.
Parque Natural de
Corralejo + Dunas de Corralejo: Incredible view and surroundings. The
road pass through the Natural Park and through the dunes. Sand can be
found on the way, caution while driving. There is an amazing beach
surrounded by the dunes. We didn’t stop only because of the lack of
time. In my opinion it is one of the best spot.
Playa Blanca: The ferry
ticket for the car cost more than if you rent the car in Lanzarote.
My personal advice is to:
- Park the car somewhere close by the harbour in Corralejo
- Rent a car for one day in Lanzarote
Beaches: because most of
the beaches cannot be reached by car, we had to stay at downtown
Playa Blanca.
Costa de Papagayo:
Impossible to be reached
Salinas de Janubio: on our
way to Laguna de Janubio, we passed by these marvelous Salinas. This
is a must to see.
Laguna de Janubio: Amazing
spot; unfortunately no space to settle down. We most probably had to
go somewhere else, but the time didn’t give us the chance to figure
out where to.
Timanfaya National Park +
Parque Natural Los Volcanes: We were there around 12-13!!! In the
highest sun!!!! Remember to bring some bottles of water with you. The
queue is quite long. The advice is to get there as earlier as
possible, in order to enter straight away. Tourist buses and
organized tours have the priority…All this is forgotten immediately
while on the park bus tour. The tour explanation is in Spanish and
English. It’s really worth a visit.
Yaiza: It cannot be
skipped. I got in love with it on the way to the Timanfaya Natural
Park. It seems to live and stay in a nativity scene…and the
nativity scene displayed in the city centre has probably a real
meaning (a part from the religious one). Ate tasty churros next by
the nativity scene.
